If you are saying to yourself, “What? Suppressing symptoms causes chronic disease?”

Yes, I am sorry to tell you. When I found this out, I was shocked at first, but upon reflection, it makes sense.

It may happen next year or not even for 1o years, but suppressing symptoms causes chronic disease. There is a very clear connection. Since most of us want to avoid chronic disease, let’s take a deeper look at this.

A metaphor to make it clear how suppressing symptoms causes chronic disease

Here is a scenario for you. You are on a road trip. Your check engine light comes on. Unfortunately, this is a long road trip, you are in a hurry and don’t want to stop at the mechanic’s to troubleshoot, and you do not want to stare at that light the whole time. So, you open the hood and pull out the light bulb. Whew! Now you can get on with your drive. Have you fixed the problem? Most people would agree that the problem is still there. It could be something simple, like you are low on oil, or it could be something major that will cause your car to stop working before you get to your destination. Either way, the problem is still there, but we have taken away the sign or signal to alert us.

Guess what?! Your body uses signs to alert you to a problem. They are called SYMPTOMS!

Let’s say you have a headache. You don’t know why you have a headache, but you do know that you have to give a presentation in an hour and you want to be able to concentrate. So, you take an Advil or Tylenol. Your headache indeed goes away. You give your presentation and don’t think twice about it. Your headache comes back later in the evening, so you take another dose of your OTC pain med and go to sleep. You have done no troubleshooting. You did not listen to your body’s dialogue with you. Instead you “shushed” your body like you would a toddler. “Not now body, I don’t have time.”

This one instance of shushing your body may not amount to anything. Let’s say, however, that these headaches are getting more frequent. They happen once or twice a week now. Each time you decide you don’t have time to be down with a headache and you continue taking your OTC pain med. Not even taking into consideration the side effects of your OTC pain med, which are not to be taken lightly, but are a subject for another post, you are continually telling your body that you won’t listen.

Your body’s symptoms are important messages!

As with most things in life, addressing the issue sooner rather than later is always the easiest route. This leads me to another metaphor for you.

You get chocolate on your favorite shirt. Do you let the shirt sit with chocolate on it for a few days before getting around to cleaning it? No! You take the shirt off as soon as you are able to put some stain solution on it. Then you put it in the wash and hope for the best. Or, if it is extremely important to you, you enlist the help of an expert and take it to your trusted dry cleaner. Leaving  the stain, or symptom, to set only makes matters worse.

We should treat our bodies better than our treat your favorite shirt!

So, yes my friend, suppressing symptoms causes chronic disease. I wrote another post called “Why you Should Love your Symptoms” if you want to check it out. 😉

Suppression

Examples of how suppressing symptoms causes chronic disease

In our western medicine paradigm which is built on cut it, kill it, remove it, squash it, doctors see this progression of disease all the time. They may not understand that suppression is causing it, or they may, but their hands are tied by the inadequate nature of the system they work in when it comes to chronic disease. (If I have a major medical trauma, however, a western medicine ER is where I want to be!)

One very clear cut example is in children who have eczema as babies or toddlers. They are given topical steroid creams. Often, the eczema does go away! Unfortunately, the child is extremely likely to present with asthma in the following years. It’s almost a certainty. They even have a term for it. It is called the ATOPIC MARCH or the Allergic March. They will likely present with food allergies and sensitivities as well. Did the steroid cream CURE the child? Absolutely not! The cream shushed the symptom. The steroid cream drove the dysfunction deeper into the body. The skin and the lungs are very related organs and so the lungs were the next logical place for the body to start talking.

What should I do instead of suppressing symptoms?

The good news is that you don’t have to just suffer through your symptoms. Homeopathy has remedies that not only alleviate your symptoms, but gently uproot them as well. Homeopathy, which is the second most widely used form of medicine in the WORLD (western medicine is #4), utilizes the symptoms as the signs that they are.

In the headache example above, let’s say that the cause was related to blood sugar dysregulation. By looking at the symptoms of the headache: Where on the head does it hurt? Is it only on one side? What time of day does it occur? What makes it better? What makes it worse? What precedes it?, the homeopath can find the correct remedy or remedies. These remedies will give the body the signals it needs to bring itself back into balance, thus alleviating not only the headache, but the underlying blood sugar dysregulation too! That means that you have avoided chronic blood sugar disorders such as hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, and diabetes!

What if I already have chronic disease?

I have good news for you here too. Even if your chronic disease is well underway, homeopathy can both alleviate your daily symptoms while uprooting your condition. How long it takes to uproot depends on the condition, how long you have had it (remember the chocolate you let sit on the shirt?), how many times you have suppressed that condition (remember when you ripped that check engine light bulb out?). The wonderful thing is that you aren’t stuck with your condition forever!

If you are ready to stop suppressing your symptoms and start uprooting your conditions, I can help!
