Why does Activated Charcoal help with GI symptoms?
Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been oxidized. Once it is oxidized, it is porous and binds to toxins, chemicals, and even metals! This means that it can bind to the toxin in your stomach that is making you sick! Yay!
You can, of course, take it in capsule form. I do this before I go into my infrared sauna to bind with the toxins that my body is releasing. However, kids are not really into swallowing capsules, so in our house we make them into gummies.
I like to use a strong juice to mask the flavor of the charcoal like concord grape, but if your child doesn’t like grape, you could do apple or a fancy combo like blueberry pomegranate.
Charcoal Gummies:
- 2 cups organic concord grape juice (or other strong flavor)
- 4 Tablespoon Vital Proteins grass-fed gelatin powder
- 1 Tablespoon Organic Maple Syrup
- 1 Tablespoon food grade activated charcoal powder
- Silicon Molds
Directions:
- Put your grape juice and maple syrup in a pot and sprinkle the gelatin powder over it. Let the gelatin bloom for a few minutes before turning on the heat to medium.
- Whisk until the gelatin is fully dissolved.
- Remove from the heat and add the activated charcoal, stirring until the charcoal has fully dissolved and there are no clumps.
- Carefully pour the liquid into silicone molds and refrigerate for a few hours or freeze for 30 minutes so that the gummies are firm and can be easily removed.
- Place the gummies in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or the freezer for months
- Take 5 standard sized gummies at a time when symptoms are acute (throwing up, diarrhea, stomach cramping).

This is genius! Thank you for sharing your recipe because I never would have thought of that. You’re right, kids don’t do the capsule thing. I have a ten year old who still won’t swallow them. These are perfect!
And where did you get that adorable hippo mold – love it!
Thank you! The hippo molds are from Amazon. The same mold also has lions and bears, but they aren’t pictured.
This is such a great idea! I love recipes like this, but I have to be honest and say that I’ve never bought any of the powdered collagen or gelatins. I would love more information about how those products are produced!!
You definitely need to do your research when choosing collagens and gelatins. I use grass-fed beef gelatin for making gummies. For collagen in my tea, I rotate between marine (wild-caught) and one from beef, chicken, and fish that are all pastured or wild-caught.
I love this kind of recipes – simple (seemingly anyway) and yet so useful! Thanks
It is totally simple! You can do it while you are making dinner 🙂
What a great idea! I have to try this, just need to order the right ingredients. Thanks
Let me know how it goes!
You are welcome! Enjoy!
Oh I’m definitely keeping this one. I always forget how easy gummies are to make and I didn’t realize you could freeze them. I”m sure at some point this winter, we’ll need them.
I feel a sense of security having a batch of these in the freezer. 🙂
