The Instant Pot is my new favorite kitchen tool. I wrote about why here if you are interested. One of my favorite applications of said Instant Pot is making hard boiled eggs! If you have ever hard boiled a farm-fresh egg, you know that you lose a ton of egg while trying to peel the shell. They are simply too fresh. Making your hardboiled eggs in the Instant Pot won’t save you any time, but it will save you frustration if you sometimes end up with green in your yolks or eggs that won’t peel well.
How to make perfect hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot:
- Pour 1 cup of water in the bottom of the Instant Pot.
- Place a steamer basket (or just use the rack that came with your IP) in the Instant Pot and fill it with your uncooked eggs. (I usually do about 8 at a time, but if you have another rack, you could do more.)
- Close the lid and make sure the valve set to sealing. Set the pressure cooker for 5 minutes on high pressure. It will take about 5 minutes to come up to pressure. (If you would like to soft-boil your eggs, set the IP on manual for 3 minutes.)
- Once the cooking time is up, let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes. (Unless you want to soft-boil. If this is the case, do a quick release right away.)
- Release any leftover pressure manually.
- Place your eggs into an ice bath (or at least cold water) so that they stop cooking.
- Refrigerate and enjoy later, or peel and enjoy your perfect hard boiled eggs now!!

People who eat hard boiled eggs and would like to have another hobby besides fruitlessly trying to peel them should invest in an Instapot. Seriously. I didn’t even know this was a benefit of owning one until I already had it. The shells just pop right off – no fuss, no muss. Love it!
Oh my gosh.. I never even made that connection with farm fresh and why you lose so much egg! Now I’m gonna have to go get an insta pot! Lol thanks for the tips and tricks!!
Oh my gosh I never even made that connection with farm fresh eggs and why you lose so much! Now I’m gonna have to go buy an instapot !! Thanks so much for the tips and tricks!
I’m going to have to try this! I have an off brand pot so the settings are different and I tend to overcook smaller things, but I’m starting to figure it out. This would take the guess work and long boiling times out of making my boiled eggs for breakfast!
It is the only way I make hard boiled eggs now. So easy!!
Apparently I need to get an InstaPot! I keep seeing people posting about how easy they are to use… maybe I’ll need to look into it! Thank you for sharing this idea. I haven’t had problems with our farm fresh eggs, but I know a lot of people who do! I will have to recommend this!
Oh great tip! We eat A LOT of hard boiled eggs around here!!
