I am using this Marshmallow Rose Face Mask twice a day right now! We are having a dry spell here in the Seattle area. While it is lovely to see the sun in a season other than summer, my skin has not been happy about it. Enter this face mask. It is so hydrating, nourishing, and soothing. Marshmallow and Rose both provide instant relief for dry, chapped skin. Not only does it feel so good, but it is a cinch to make. It will take only a minute unless you have to run out and get (or order) the ingredients. It happens that rose water and rose essential oil are ingredients I use regularly in my skin care routine, and I always have marshmallow root on hand to use in my Decoction of Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, and Licorice to heal and seal the gut.

Marshmallow Rose Face Mask Ingredients:

  • Marshmallow works similarly on the outside of your body as it does on the inside. (Incidentally, addressing the inside skin (your gut) will also go a long way toward helping your outside skin). Marshmallow is mucilaginous, so when it comes into contact with water it turns into a gel-like substance. This gel coats and seals your skin and calms down inflammation. It also fights bacteria.
  • Rose water is hydrating and nourishing. It has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe angry skin and calm down redness. You can even use it on eczema and rosacea. Rose water helps maintain the ph balance of your skin. It is also antibacterial. We can add smells amazing and lifts your mood to this list as well!
  • Rose Essential Oil has the same benefits as rose water, but it is much more concentrated. It is hydrating, soothing, balancing, and anti-microbial. The scent of rose oil will immediately lift your mood.

How to make Marshmallow Rose Face Mask:

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon ground marshmallow root. You can buy it in ground or chopped form. I buy chopped because I use it in decoctions and marshmallows. I just grind it myself in my dedicated spice grinder (This is just a coffee bean grinder that I only use for grinding spices).
  • 1 tablespoon rose water (hydrosol)
  • A few drops of Rose or Rose Blend Essential oil (optional, but highly recommended).

Directions:

  • Put 1 teaspoon of ground marshmallow powder in a small bowl.
  • Mix in one tablespoon of rose water and a couple of drops of rose essential oil.
  • Let the mixture sit so that the marshmallow absorbs the rose water and oil (anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours).
  • After the marshmallow has absorbed the water/oil, it should be a gel-like consistency.
  • Use a fan brush or your fingers to apply it.
  • Let the mixture sit on your face until it dries.
  • Upon drying, you can either apply another layer over it and let that layer dry, or take it off with a warm wet cloth.
  • Once you remove the mask, it is important to hydrate! I use my rose hip face serum (with rose essential oil) or sesame calendula oil (sesame oil with calendula flowers steeped in it for 3 weeks). You get better penetration with an oil. Once that is absorbed, I apply either my night cream or my day cream.
