Homemade Hemp Butter is one of my new favorite things! It is by far the simplest butter to make, in my opinion, because the seeds don’t even need soaking! Here we have 3 variations: plain, chocolate, and vanilla chai. If you have read my hemp milk post, you already know that hemp hearts are packed with nutrients and healthy fats. I generally use my hemp butters for dipping and adding to smoothies, but you can, of course, use them for a good ol’ fashioned hemp butter and jelly sandwich!

Benefits of Hemp Hearts

  • They are a  great source of easily digestible protein. They also have more protein than chia or flax seeds.
  • Hemp hearts are also a great source of fiber and resistant starch!
  • They are made up of 30% healthy fats and contain two essential fatty acids (omega 3s, and 6s)
  • These powerful little seeds contain many important minerals including potassium, phosphorus and calcium, sulfur (important for insulin regulation and the production of the powerful detoxifier, glutathione), iron, zinc (See my post “Is Your Health Being Sabotaged by a Zinc Deficiency?“), and magnesium, which, unfortunately, most Americans are deficient in. See my post “Do you have a Magnesium Deficiency?” if you would like to know about the host of problems caused and/or exacerbated by a magnesium deficiency and to learn if you have one. (Hint: if you have trouble sleeping, you probably are deficient.)
  • Hemp hearts are full of the powerful antioxidant, vitamin E.
  • They are great for skin health, cardiovascular disease, aid digestion, and can help balance hormones.

If you are looking for something else fun to do with hemp seeds, you can top salds with them, add them to smoothies and portien shakes and even make milk with them. See my post, “Hemp milk with flavor variations (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry” or Strength and Sunshine’s post for Hempnog!

Note: Except for the chocolate hemp butter, the color will be green as is seen in the photos. This may seem a little strange at first, but hemp butter is delicious, so you will soon forget that it is green. As for your kids, maybe introduce them to the chocolate version first. Once they know and love the flavor, they will be less likely to put up a fuss over the color. 🙂
