Homemade Hemp Milk (with flavor variations)

Homemade hemp milk has just three ingredients and because hemp seeds don’t need to be soaked, it takes only two minutes to make! Use your tasty homemade hemp milk in smoothies, baking, or anywhere else you would use milk or a milk replacement. Try one of the three flavor variations below if you just want to drink it alone.

Benefits of Hemp Hearts:

      • They are a  great source of easily digestible protein. They also have more protein than chia or flax seeds.
      • Hemp hearts are also a great source of fiber and resistant starch!
      • They are made up of 30% healthy fats and contain two essential fatty acids (omega 3s and 6s)
      • These powerful little seeds contain many important minerals including potassium, phosphorus and calcium (bone health), sulfur (important for insulin regulation and the production of the powerful detoxifier, glutathione), iron (blood health), zinc (immune health), and magnesium, which, unfortunately, most Americans are deficient in. Seemy post “Do you have a Magnesium Deficiency?” if you would like to know about the host of problems caused and/or exacerbated by a magnesium deficiency and to learn if you have one. (Hint: if you have trouble sleeping, you probably are deficient.)
      • Hemp hearts are full of the powerful antioxidant, vitamin E.
      • They are great for skin health, cardiovascular disease, aid digestion, and can help balance hormones.

Why make your own hemp milk?

Not only does homemade hemp milk taste MUCH better than store-bought versions, by making your own homemade hemp milk, you will skip the synthetic vitamins, sweeteners like brown rice syrup and cane sugar, as well as the preservatives and thickeners. Plus, as I said above, since hemp hearts don’t need to be soaked, it literally takes TWO minutes.

Another good reason for making homemade hemp milk is to increase your family’s consumption of seeds. My kids aren’t big on nuts yet, and they both attend nut free schools. Homemade hemp milk is a way to get in some of the amazing healthy fats and other nutrients present in nuts and seeds in a disguised form while they are at home.

Why don’t hemp hearts need to be soaked?

If you have been reading my blog, you have probably heard me say that grains, nuts, and seeds should be soaked. In the traditional food camp, we try to eat our grains soured or sprouted, as in sourdough. We also try to eat our grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes only after they have

been soaked or sprouted. The reason for this is that they contain phytic acid which is an enzyme inhibitor. Basically, this keeps the grains, nuts, and seeds and legumes from sprouting before the time is right. This is good for the propagation of the plants, but bad for your stomach.

The phytic acid actually binds to the minerals in the nuts, legumes, grains, and seeds tying them up, making them unavailable. Your pancreas then has to kick it in to high gear to produce extra enzymes to help you digest the nuts, grains, and seeds. This is very tough on your pancreas and since the pancreas plays such a huge role in your digestive health, you really don’t want to be too hard on it if it can be avoided. It just takes a little forethought to soak your grains, nuts, seeds, an

d legumes and unlock those minerals! You can also now buy nuts and some grains that have been sprouted.

With all this said, hemp hearts do NOT contain phytic acid! You can add them straight to your smoothies, salads, or make hemp milk with them without having to think ahead. Good times 🙂
